NEWS - Accelerating implementation of hyperloop as clean alternative to short-haul flights and road traffic should be prioritized - IPCC report shows immediate climate action required

The IPCC this week published their climate report, showing clear evidence of CO2 emissions being the main driver of climate change and the only chance we have is to drastically limit the use of fossil fuels.

Stabilizing the climate will require strong, rapid, and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and reaching net zero CO2 emissions. said IPCC Working Group I Co-Chair Panmao Zhai

The hyperloop, as a highly energy-efficient, zero-emission way of high-speed transport for both passengers and goods, can drastically reduce the transport sector's CO2 emission by substituting short-haul flights and triggering model shift from road.

Mars Geuze, CCO Hardt Hyperloop says: “This underscores the fact that we can’t afford to take a wait-and-see attitude towards solutions that will deliver major improvement. Especially when, in the case of hyperloop, it allows us to achieve substantial economic growth rather than mitigations influencing our economies negatively.”

The issue with the slow transition is the trade-off between climate change and the current fossil-fuel-based economy: we can’t just stop flying, or put a halt to the global logistics supply chain. We need alternatives that deliver a better proposition without Climate impact.

Last year, the World Economic Forum appointed hyperloop as one of the largest markets of tomorrow. Until 2040, an estimated €42T must be invested in transport infrastructure. Instead of putting this towards traditional modalities that already account for 25% of global emissions, investing less than 10% of this total in hyperloop would enable the implementation of a worldwide zero-emission hyperloop network of 100,000 km, which is about 10% of the current 1,000,000 km rail network.

Thankfully, the European Commission is already taking an increasingly stronger position, among others by including the hyperloop in the Smart and Sustainable Mobility Strategy action plan, as a crucial element in reducing transport emissions. But stronger action is required.

The time for a new transport mode is now: we need to grab this opportunity and show the importance of transition and economic recovery plans allowing room for investments in the hyperloop industry to accelerate the developments and shorten the roadmap to a zero-emission alternative to both short-haul flights and road traffic.
